Most car manufacturers recommend service intervals from 10,000 kms or 15,000 kms and even up to 20,000 kms.
But these service intervals are dramatically reduced under certain operating conditions.
We generally recommend more frequent servicing, depending on factors such as vehicle age and driving conditions.
Apart from the benefits of changing the oil, regular servicing allows us to identify safety concerns and replace any worn items before they cause major damage, or a serious traffic accident.
FACTORS THAT REDUCE SERVICE INTERVALS
Many European cars have services intervals suitable for much colder operating environments.
The combination of the following factors dramatically reduce recommended service intervals in Australia:
- extremes of heat and cold
- rough road conditions, pot holes, corrugations
REASONS FOR CHANGING ENGINE OIL
- By-products of combustion, particularly when the engine is cold, cause sludge build up in the oil, which can block oil galleries and starve moving parts
of lubrication. - Dilution from Fuel will make the oil thinner and reduce its lubricating properties.
- Metal deposits from moving components, builds up in the oil and accelerates wear.
Regular servicing using a top quality lubricant reduces the effect of these problems, and greatly increases the life of your engine.
It will also improve fuel economy, increase performance, and keep your vehicle safe and reliable.
TIME VERSUS DISTANCE
While car manufacturers specify distance as the measure for vehicle servicing, a vehicle that travels low kilometres per year should be serviced every 6 months, regardless of the distance travelled.
Oils and lubricants in the car can deteriorate with time, even when the car is not driven, as can other parts of the car, including rubber belts and hoses.
